So, my little family consists of me, the awesome hubby, and the cutest 2-year-old in the world. (Seriously, he knows he’s the cutest thing, and uses that to his advantage) Since I decided to stay home after working part-time the first year after the cutest 2-year-old was born, we have found ourselves “financially strapped” so to say. My awesome hubby works super hard at his job, and lucky for us got a promotion this year, but due to budget issues, he hasn’t had a raise in 4 years. Not even a COLA raise. And everything is so much more expensive now a days. So, that is the background to this post.
I have decided to try to save money as much as possible, without giving up too much of our pleasures. This means that I am going to take up “couponing.” I am so excited. No really. I am.
I never really get the people who “coupon” and turn into crazy Armageddon stockpilers. I did recently run into a group of ladies that know their stuff. They are the girls behind truecouponing.com. I went to a workshop, I got energized, and I think I can do this. The idea behind the process is to have numerous coupon inserts (from Sunday papers), wait until things go on sale (BOGO is wonderful), use the coupons to the best advantage when things are on sale and get the lowest price. Repeat every 12 weeks. No stockpiling craziness, just buying enough to last 12 weeks when things are at their lowest price. No buying things you don’t need. (Although some items can be “moneymakers” and then you would buy them and donate them to someone who needs them, which is a win-win. You get the overage toward your groceries, and someone needy gets free products)
So here I go. I will let you know how it goes.
Also, I am going to try and cook more at home so that we don’t eat out as much. A good portion of our monthly income goes to resturaunt food. To help transition to a more domestic food lifestyle, I am going to try out some great freezing recipes and make them ahead of time. Make enough food for one week on 1 day, and then I don’t have to actually cook for the rest of the week! Woohoo.
My first casserole was a big hit. Creole Shrimp Casserole. I will post the recipe sometime soon. Tonight is a Mexican Chicken Enchilada casserole that I just whipped up on my own, no recipe. Hopefully it is yummy.
This idea pretty much came from my “word geek” mom. In an effort to provide some kind of intelligent commentary here I have decided to have a Wednesday Word of the Day! (Come on you know you love it. )
Today’s word is EVANESCENT (adj)
Soon passing out of sight, memory, or existence; quickly fading or disappearing
- – a shimmering evanescent bubble
So, I’m hoping that my little corner of the blogosphere isn’t evanescent!
I am having a little bit of trouble figuring out just what I want to do here. I don’t exactly know what I want out of this blog thing. I have a few different ideas.
I could have a blog where I regale you with funny stories. . . I have a lot of interesting stories about my family, growing up, and high school, then college. A kind of “One time at band camp. . .” blog. (and yes, I did go to band camp)
I could be a funny joker blogger . . . and just provide your daily giggle with my witty observations on the mundane everyday.
I could have a DIY blog, where I show you my awesome crafty skills, and impart that awesomeness to you. I could show you how to build a bookcase from Ikea and only have to take it apart once! I can make greeting cards and scrapbook pages, make jewelry, paint paintings, and various other artistic pursuits.
I could have a semi-political blog, and rant and rave about how I think our country is going to hell in a hand basket.
I could be a mommy blogger, because well… I’m a mom. I think I’m a pretty decent one, although my son did eat a whole box of fruit roll-ups today, and I was pretty excited about it because he doesn’t eat anything lately. Then I thought about the nutritional value of a pound of waxy faux fruit pressed into flat squares and rolled in preservatives. . .
Maybe I’ll just have to go with the flow and figure it out, you might just get a little bit of all of that.
I’m having an existential crisis of the blog here.
What is the purpose of this blog? Or do I need this blog to find the purpose?
We’ll see. . .
